SAN MIGUEL CORPORATION
On Aril 16, 1990, the Philippine
Post Office released a set of two stamps to commemorate the centenary of the San Miguel Brewery. The corporation was established during
the last decade of the 20th century, a period of historic upheavals in the Philippines.
Today, the San Miguel Corporation is one of the largest corporations
in the Philippines and it has branches in a number of countries in the Asia-Pacific region. It is a food and
beverage conglomerate and one of its well-known product is the San Miguel beer.

BASKETBALL IN THE PHILIPPINES
The first professional
basketball league in Asia was established in the Philippines during the 1970's. It was named Philippine Basketball Association
or the PBA.

ANDRES BONIFACIO, KATIPUNEROS
AND CARLOS "BOTONG" FRANCISCO
In 1896, Andres Bonifacio and the
katipuneros launched an uprising against the Spanish colonial administration in the Philippines which, eventually, led
to Philippine independence in 1898. This historic event served as the inspiration for the creative art works of Carlos Francisco,
a Filipino national artist. The designs of the stamps were taken from these art works.

FISHES AND PHILATELIC EXHIBITION
The
seas and waters surrounding the Philippine archipelago are rich sources of marine species. Food-fish abounds, and marine species
such as aquarium fishes, shells and corals are popular topics in stamp collecting. Philatelic collections on marine life can
be seen on display in competitive philatelic exhibitions.

PHILIPPINE BIRDS
Four Philippine birds were featured on
these stamps which were issued on November 8, 1994. These were: blue-naped parrot (Tanygnathus Lucionensis), bleeding heart
pigeon (Gallicolumba Luzonica), Palawan peacock pheasant (Polyplectron emphanum) and Koch's Pitta (Pitta kochi). Among these
birds, the blue-naped parrot is a favorite pet animal.
The subject, "birds," is another popular topic in stamp
collecting.
